Red Bull Stratos Capsule FEA Simulation Keynote for NEi Nastran Conference

WESTMINSTER, CA — (Marketwired) — 06/17/13 — Chief Engineer for the , Bill Dodson, relied on engineering analysis and simulation software to deal with the complexities of getting Felix Baumgartner 24 miles above the Earth for his sound-barrier breaking skydive on October 14, 2012. There was nothing standard or off the shelf about the cutting edge Red Bull Stratos project. Bill and a team of engineers at Sage Cheshire Aerospace needed to design and build a capsule that would provide a safe environment against the hostile conditions of vacuum and temperature extremes, and yet be extremely light weight for the helium balloon ascent. Bill will explain to an audience of computer-aided engineering (CAE) practitioners at the NEi Nastran 2013 User Conference how he used software to compute stresses, and virtually test different materials for structural and thermal performance, particularly with the complication of a pressurized structure and features like doors, windows, and pass-throughs for power and oxygen. His analysis work led to successful proof tests. Subsequently, the 3,000 pound capsule fully loaded with recording, communication, instrumentation, and safety gear would travel over two hours to reach a record altitude for manned balloon flight, provide a platform for the space jump, return by parachute, and land intact using crush pads. Bill-s background in structural analysis includes previous projects at AeroVironment, Scaled Composites, Ferranti, XCOR, and the Flight Test Center at Edwards Air Force Base.
