Oil Heat Gets Green With Bioheat(R) Fuel; Reduces Carbon Footprint and Saves Nearly 100 Million Gallons of Petroleum Annually

NORTH ANDOVER, MA — (Marketwire) — 01/10/13 — Northeast residents can reduce their carbon footprint this winter and potentially save nearly 100 million gallons of petroleum by using a new biodiesel, natural resource heating oil, Bioheat® Fuel. Taking the lead in the move to more sustainable oil heating is the nation-s largest municipal user of biodiesel, New York City. The city makes headlines as the first city to mandate a 2 percent biodiesel usage in heating oil, giving the city a tremendous boost in sustainability. Bioheat Fuel is available in the Northeast and can easily be used in homes with existing heating systems for nearly the same cost as traditional heating oil.

The Energy Communications Council reports that 80% of oil heat households in the United States are located in the Northeast region and purchase about 5.1 billion gallons of heating oil in a year. For each household that moves to Bioheat Fuel, there is a potential CO2 emissions savings equivalent of driving 291 miles. With Bioheat Fuel, there is no need to modify or replace heating equipment. Bioheat Fuel is a cleaner burning fuel, and as a result, many homes see a cost savings from higher boiler efficiency, greater fuel consistency and reduced maintenance and cleanings.

„The impact in moving to 2 percent Bioheat Fuel in the Northeast is substantial,“ states Paul Nazzaro, President of Advanced Fuel Solutions and advocate for the National Biodiesel Board-s Bioheat education program. „As residents look for ways to become more environmentally responsible, Bioheat Fuel provides an easy option without investing in additional equipment or increasing heating bills. The mandate by NYC officials exemplifies its commitment to sustainability, locally and nationally. They have become the catalyst for Bioheat Fuel in the Northeast region. It-s a win-win for the public and the environment.“

The NYC mandate requires the use of a minimum of 2 percent biodiesel (B2), known as Bioheat Fuel, in all of the city-s commercial and residential heating oil. With this mandate, the city cements its commitment to the city-s sustainability agenda. Furthermore, by using Bioheat Fuel, NYC alone can replace up to 20 million gallons of petroleum annually — that-s the carbon equivalent of taking 30,000 cars off the road in New York City.

With Bioheat Fuel, petroleum is replaced with a local, renewable resource that burns cleaner, reducing the emissions footprint. In addition to the environmental benefits, using Bioheat Fuel also has the economic impact of creating up to 780 biodiesel production jobs in the region and nearly $42 million in additional household income, according to a recent study by the National Biodiesel Board.

„The New York Oil Heat Association (NYOHA) has long fought for a new standard in heating oil,“ said the association-s CEO John Maniscalco. „The heating oil of the past will soon be gone. Instead, Bioheat® Fuel will become the standard in home heating sustainability. NYC should be proud to lead the effort and proud -2B- staying warm.“

As a thank you to the city, Bioheat is gearing up to launch the NYC Proud 2B2 Renewable Warmup campaign on their Web site, awarding three charities that help „warm“ NYC grants. Nazzaro says, „We wanted to give back to the NYC community in more need than ever after the impact of Hurricane Sandy. We also wanted to do it in a way that will increase the awareness of Bioheat-s benefits to other regions.“
