The physical principle is rather simple: Rapid, uniformly repetitive movements, such as rotation or vibration, are illuminated by a stroboscope with a flash frequency adapted to the rate and always at the same position. The observer perceives an apparently standing picture.
For the precise speed measurement using a stroboscope the company ELMED Messetechnik recommends the following procedure: Highlight the object with the maximum possible frequency / object speed. Then continuously reduce the frequency until the object seems to have come to a standstill. For the verification of your measurement double the measured flash frequency. When measuring correctly the section of the object respectively the mark on the object is visible twice. If the object or the marks on the object appear only once, there is an error of measurement. The effective flash frequency is a multiple in whole number.
An external trigger signal can be supplied over the jack “external impulse“. Thus the stroboscope is automatically synchronised with the moving object. The frequency of the signal defines the flash frequency of the stroboscope. External trigger signals can be generated by i.e. a machine control or an optic or magnetic encoder. The results are pin sharp images even under different speeds without manual adjustment of the stroboscope. ELMED stroboscopes equipped with the “phase shift” function even allow the observation of a motion sequence in any position. By means of this function you can define or change the observed section respectively the exact moment within a repetitive motion (rotation, vibration, etc.). Using a stroboscope you can even observe an entire motion sequence in slow motion. For this purpose again highlight the object with the maximum possible frequency / object speed. Then continuously reduce the frequency until the object seems to have come to a standstill. Subsequently, increase the flash frequency until the object moves in the desired speed. In case you want to observe a test object moving in the opposite direction, slowly reduce the flash frequency until the oppositely directed motion adjusts to the desired sped. On their YouTube channel the company ELMED Messtechnik provides a product video which demonstrates the numerous applications. www.youtube.com/watch?v=edO4aUy7qzY For further information on this subject as well as on the different models of stroboscope please visit the company’s website at www.elmed-stroboscopes.com
