Karlsruhe, June 2013 – The new zbMATH web interface is online, with a completely new layout and innovative search functionality (http://zbmath.org). FIZ Karlsruhe – Leibniz Institute for Information Infrastructure has developed the new user interface providing an intuitive, easy-to-use information service with enlarged functionality that meets the requirements of users in the mathematical community. zbMATH is the world“s largest information system for mathematics. It is jointly edited by FIZ Karlsruhe, the European Mathematical Society (EMS) and the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences.

„The scientists“ demands on information services have significantly changed over the years,“ says Prof. Marta Sanz-Solé, President of the European Mathematical Society. „Information systems like zbMATH are nowadays indispensable for searching as well as for analyzing and visualizing research information. Our requirements have not only broadened but have also become more complex. The new possibilities offered by zbMATH support us not only in finding individual publications but also in analyzing answer sets and thus discovering additional information that leads us to new findings.“

zbMATH supports its users in answering manifold questions. How has a certain mathematical topic, e.g., the Poincaré conjecture, evolved during the last century from its formulation to the proof furnished by Perelman? What current research continues the concepts developed in this process, like, for example, the Kähler-Ricci-Flow? What have been the most rapidly growing areas during the last decade regarding the increase of publications? FIZ Karlsruhe has improved the underlying, powerful search engine that allows for all kinds of logical search combinations.

Completely new is the integration of swMATH. FIZ Karlsruhe has developed this new type of database. It allows for searching mathematical software, combined with links to relevant publications in zbMATH. The development of swMATH is subsidized as a project within the „Joint Initiative for Research and Innovation“, the research contest of the Leibniz Association. Prof. Dr. Dr. h. c. Gert-Martin Greuel, project leader and editor-in-chief of zbMATH states: „This new service, developed in collaboration with Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach, fundamentally expands FIZ Karlsruhe“s information services in mathematics and is of particular interest for users of mathematical methods.“

The new interface now presents zbMATH in a much clearer way. Specific emphasis has been placed on the visual functions. Leaner text parts give a fast and precise overview of the information. Additional information is now often available via mouse-over or in scroll down menus. Last but not least: The new interface has been optimized for mobile devices.
