How can manufacturing companies leverage kanban in production and materials management without falling foul to the pitfalls of the process? Cloos Schweisstechnik found its answer in RFID technology and a SAP-based production control system. The full story and a detailed description of the solution are available on the SAP information portal www.SAP.info .
Using the kanban process to keep manual effort at a minimum requires containers of various sizes. Handling these containers, however, does present its challenges – warehouse capacity is reduced, while demands on materials-handling technology increase.
To implement kanban, Cloos Schweisstechnik had to find room for 3,400 additional storage spaces to accommodate trays and containers – all within its existing production hall. To make the most of the area available and to save warehouse space for the future, the company opted for its first RFID tray management system. The solution integrated RFID transponders into the kanban containers to control the flow of materials in the automatic storage retrieval system.
One of the benefits of the RFID tracking technology for Cloos is the ability to locate containers on the tray at any time. The technology also ensures the proper removal of small parts from containers.
